Summer in Philly: Campus Philly Staff Picks

bloggraphics-treatment13

We can’t top Mayor Kenney’s letter to you college students about living and working in Philadelphia for the summer, but we can* add to his message by sharing our favorite things to do here in the summertime.

Patrick Sherlock, Vice President, University Relations and Student Engagement
There’s so many things to do in Philly during the summer. I like to enjoy evening bike rides, neighborhood chilling – on stoops, front steps, porches, and through screen doors. I’ve met some amazing people through sports leagues in Fairmount Park and connected with old friends through outdoor eating and drinking.  My favorite picks include: Parks on Tap, Memphis Taproom beer garden, cupcake truck at Dollar Stroll.

Ella Strauss, Open Arts Program Manager
Even though I love living in the city, my favorite thing to do during the summer is to head down the shore. It is the best way to escape the heat and get some fresh salt air, plus it’s only a short drive away. Everyone is relaxed and it’s a great time to catch up with friends and family.

Brynn Monaghan, Communications Manager
I love simple summer things like riding my bike to Reading Terminal Market to grab some fresh produce and making a pit stop at Spruce Street Harbor Park to people watch. One of my favorite summer moments in Philly was cruising around on the back of my friend’s scooter with a milkshake from Joe’s Steaks in hand; we rode to La Peg to watch an outdoor movie under the Ben Franklin Bridge.

Reggie Hall, Senior Program Manager, Partnerships
Philly has so many low cost ways to have fun in the summer. I like visiting Race Street Pier for their free yoga session. Can’t have a better start to a warm summer day than to jog to the Race Street Pier, join their free yoga session around 9:30AM, and then snag brunch at Day by Day in Center City.

Jen Devor, Director, Partnerships
During the summer, the streets are filled with action. This is a perfect time for people watching & gelato from Capogiro at “the fountain” on Passyunk Ave.

Roger Estes, Creative Director
My favorite thing to do in the summer is spend time in the Wissahickon Valley Park. Anyone who enjoys the great outdoors can find a place there because it has every type of terrain from paved paths to advanced hiking/mountain biking trails. The Wissahickon Creeks flows through the middle of the park with a few places to dip your toes in and there is even a spot to get ice cream at the Valley Green Inn.

Ashlie Thornbury, Vice President, Partnerships &  Deborah Diamond, President
One is the best things to do in the summer is to find one of the city’s great outdoor pools and head there for “adult swim” hours. It’s quieter than when all the kids are there and the pools are well-maintained, in lots of different neighborhoods and free!
